Time Estimate: 45 minutes
Lesson Title: Dissection of a Frog
Specific Instructional Objectives: The students will dissect a frog to learn about the anatomy of a frog and it’s functions.
Curriculum Standards:
GLE 0707.1.1 Make observations and describe
the structure and function of organelles found in
plant and animal cells.
GLE 0707.1.2 Summarize how the different
levels of organization are integrated within living
systems.
GLE 0707.Inq.1 Design and conduct open ended
scientific investigations.
GLE 0707.Inq.2 Use appropriate tools and
techniques to gather, organize, analyze, and
interpret data.
Materials and Media: frogs, dissecting tools(e.g. knives), gloves/ latex-free, pans, computer, paper towels, tweezers, instructional materials(diagram of a dissected frog) ,instructional sheet for dissecting frog, large replica of a frog
Instructional Considerations: Provisions will be made for students with IE P’s , and students who prefer not to dissect a real frog.
Teaching Learning Activities:
1. Introductory Activity/Initiating Procedures: The teacher will model how to dissect a frog. He/she will go through each step carefully and safely. Using the computer the teacher will also model how to virtually dissect a frog for the students who are unable to dissect a real frog.
2. Connection to/review of previous lesson objective: In previous lessons we discussed facts about frogs and their environment. We also discussed the parts of a frog’s body, eating habits, and survival.
3. Procedures for the Lesson:
A. Information Giving: The teacher will pair up students and give out directions for dissecting a frog. The teacher will have a set of instructions for the students who are dissecting the real frogs and the students who are doing the virtual dissections.
B. Modeling/Providing Examples/Guided Practice: The teacher will have a large replica of a dissected frog in the front of the classroom to do demonstrations during the dissecting process.
C. Checking for Understanding: The teacher will have an individual from each pair of students repeat instructions for how to use the materials safely to dissect a frog.
D. Individual Practice: The teacher will give each pair of students the materials needed to dissect a frog.(tweezers, trays, paper towels, knives, gloves, instructional sheet for dissecting a frog) The teacher will monitor as students dissect the frog using the instructional materials.
E. Closure/Culminating Procedure’s: The students will clean their stations, return materials, and dispose of waste and frog parts. The students will share with classmates about their experience dissecting a frog.(real/or virtual)
F. Enrichment/Extension:The students will create an illustrated book about their experience dissecting a frog.
4. Evaluation of Students: The students will complete and label a diagram of a dissected frog. The sheet will also contain wrap-up questions related to the lab.( for example: What was the best and the worst part about the experiment?)
